Frandsen takes lead in batting race Shortstop perfect 5-for-5, but his Scorpions fall to Solar Sox
Kevin Frandsen's 5-for-5, four-RBI (Photo by Damon Tarver) | performance for Scottsdale was wasted as Mesa exploded for six runs in the bottom of the seventh inning en route to a 10-6 win Monday.
The 24-year-old, who batted .304 in 71 games with Triple-A Fresno this season, ripped a solo homer that gave the Scorpions a short-lived 6-4 lead in the seventh. He took over the top spot in the Arizona Fall League batting race and is hitting .429 (24-for-56). He is five points above the Peoria Javelinas' Yunel Escobar, who had the day off.
The Scorpions (11-12) were leading entering the sixth, 5-1, but their bullpen couldn't close it out. David Winfree's three-run blast off Chris Kinsey cut Scottsdale's lead to 5-4 in the sixth and Bobby Malek's two-out, bases-loaded triple off Dewon Day an inning later broke open a 7-6 game.
Winfree went 2-for-3 with four RBIs. Eric Patterson and Brooks Conrad each had three hits for Mesa (11-12).
New York Mets prospect Blake McGinley (1-0) picked up the win despite allowing Frandsen's homer. He struck out one in his only inning.
Carmen Pignatiello and Clay Rapada each tossed a scoreless frame and fanned two batters apiece to close out the game.
Matt Elliott (1-2) took the loss. He started the seventh and only recorded one out, allowing three runs on three hits. Milwaukee's Manuel Parra started and held the Solar Sox in check for four frames, giving up one run on six hits while fanning five.
The Scorpions have lost four of their last five and are tied with Mesa, four games behind Phoenix in the AFL East.
