 Sakata Winningest Manager in California League History Lenn Sakata broke the Cal League record with his 527th Win Thursday SAN JOSE, CALIF June 4, 2007– San Jose Giants Manager Lenn Sakata established the new California League record in life time wins, with his 527th victory on Thursday, against the Bakersfield Blaze. He breaks the record previously held by Greg Mahlberg who managed in the 1980’s and 1990’s. This achievement marks the latest milestone for Sakata, who already holds the record for most wins in history by a San Jose Giants Manager.
Lenn Sakata has guided the team to the playoffs in all five seasons as manager in San Jose and last six seasons in the Cal League, including California League Championships in 2001 and 2005. Sakata is recognized as one of the most outstanding Minor League Managers for developing young talent, as demonstrated by 32 of his players advancing to play at the Major Leagues. Current San Francisco Giants roster players coached by Lenn Sakata include: Matt Cain, Tim Lincecum, Kevin Frandsen, Noah Lowry, Eliezer Alfonzo, Jonathan Sanchez and Fred Lewis among many other Major Leaguers.
Lenn’s contributions within the Giants organization include managing Triple-A Fresno in 2002 and serving as the roving hitting instructor in 2003. Prior to joining the Giants farm system, Sakata was an 11-year Major League veteran playing with the Milwaukee Brewers (1977-79), Baltimore Orioles (1980-85), Oakland Athletics(1986), and the New York Yankees (1986-1987). The former infielder appeared in 565 career games and was a member of the 1983 World Series Champion Baltimore Orioles.
